Why would you want to plot a mathematical function using a drawing package like Inkscape rather than a mathematical package like Mathematica or R? One reason is that you may want plot for its visual properties. For example, you might want to include a sine wave in a drawing. Another reason is that you may want to have more control or at least easier control over your plot. Mathematical packages make it easy to produce a basic plot with default options.
The things I want to do are often possible but require arcane options that I have trouble remembering. Inkscape provides a couple extensions to include function plots in a drawing. The following dialog shows the settings used to produce the graph above. The first time I tried using these extensions nothing happened. Then I discovered you have to select a rectangle to contain the plot before creating a plot; the plotting tools do not create their own rectangles.
The Function Plotter supports rectangular and polar coordinates. The function plotting extension is essentially a Python interpreter.
There may be a way to have it call Python code that gives it your data. For data plots I tend to produce a basic plot with gnumeric or similar, and export the plot as an svg file.
Then I open that file with inkscape and edit it to make it visually pleasing. Any idea what could be happening apart from a typo? Kevin: I just repeated the example in the screen shot and it worked for me. My mistake was to assume that there were no spaces in the formula? Very very beautiful butterfly. Hi, I have used the function plotter, but I want to do some editing to the plots. I have made 3 phase sine curves degrees phase shifted.
I want to make part of the curves bold. Please suggest a method to do this. Thanks, but I figured it out. I copied the plot, took the original to another layer and locked the layer.
Then I made the copy bold, converted it to a path and took intersection with a rectangle to get the desired part bold, with the original graph in background on another layer.
Thanks for the help though. I want to plot a parametric curve involving a modular inverse.Equalizer apo pubg settings

Or are you a designer looking to add to your inventory of design elements? Lattice Deformation is a new path effect that was recently added to Inkscape. It allows you to warp objects using individual nodes.
The location of the nodes is dictated by a grid. Now if you grab the Nodes tool, a grid will appear over your lines with a series of individual nodes that you can click and drag.

Hi, Nick, I just started with your mastertutorials about inkscape and I wonder if I can do a spezial 3D lines design with it. So I try to tell what it should look like. Then I want to overlay it with horizontal lines, like a thin cloth.
At the end I only want to see the lines which are coming up and down over the word. I know it is not so easy to understand, but I hope you can tell me if there is a possibility to use inkscape or gimp for it.
If you tell me how I can send you a sample I will do so. Thanks a lot for your great tutorials Ilka. You put together great, straight forward and easy to follow tutorials.Audi tt coding
Thanks for the work that you put into those. I would like to hear your opinion to a problem i got with Inkscape! Usually the result is way smaller than the area that should be the result of this action, or the shapes just have strange corners or something.
I tried making making a Celtic knot like in your video about the subject, but every time Intersection is made, all parts seem to be sized differently, this is clearly visible and noticeable when you have duplicate shapes and they are all in the same position. Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It only takes a minute to sign up. However, if I have some irregular path, this method is going to brake the line and the wavy line is not exactly follow the curvature of the path.
Is there anyway to do this in autoCAD? Like bend the object along the path or deform the object along the path. In 3D case, I would like to have a helix following the path. In inkscape, I can use pattern-along-path selecting with "single, stretch" or "repeat, stretch". It will be very surprising, if a professional CAD software does not have this function. I'm not understanding what you mean by "wavy". As it stands, it seems you are just describing splines.
Could you maybe add an example of what you mean in Inkscape? You have been active in Super User and in the rest of the SE network and as I still see it haven't yet provided enough detail. If you're still expecting an answer to this question, can you please add more detail? This is for the time being an unsearched answer I haven't got access to Autocad where I'm atbut now that I understand what you mean, I can't see the use case for that particular feature, in a CAD application.
I'm not saying it can't be done or that it doesn't exist, but it just seems an odd thing to do. Maybe with arrays but I would have to look into it. Doktoro Reichard, array cannot do the same thing even for the 1 example. It will not bend the object along the path. For 2nd case, I remember there was some function called bend. Assuming the line is drawn along the mean of both the horizontal guides from edge to edge of the vector i. The arc has the same length as the line, and after the transformation, every point in the reference line will lie along its corresponding point on the circular arc.
I understand this is a simple rectangular to polar transformation, but can't find a way to do it in Inkscape. I can get close results with "Bend path" effect, but close is not enough. I am okay with using some other software as long as it is FOSS and can do it without much effort.
Inkscape has path effect "Pattern Along Path" which can produce something resembling. It's not limited to circular arcs, the bending route can be arbitary. See an example:. The wanted bending route, must be a path, circles, rectangles etc. The curve in 2 has got path effect "Pattern Along Path" The pattern was taken from the clipboard. A nice feature of using a Bend path effect is that you also get an interactive control to adjust the width of the graphic.

Vector graphics is a resolution-independent description of the actual shapes and objects that you see in the image. A rasterization engine uses this information to determine how to plot each line and curve at any resolution or zoom level.
Contrast that to bitmap raster graphics which is always bound to a specific resolution and stores an image as a grid of pixels. Vector graphics are a complement, rather than an alternative, to bitmap graphics. Each has its own purpose and are useful for different kinds of things. Raster graphics tend to be better for photographs and some kinds of artistic drawings, whereas vectors are more suitable for design compositions, logos, images with text, technical illustrations, etc. Note that Inkscape can import and display bitmap images, too.
An imported bitmap becomes yet another object in your vector graphics, and you can do with it everything you can do to other kinds of objects move, transform, clip, etc. Its acceptance is growing fast. Most vector editors these days can import and export SVG, and modern browsers such as Firefox and Opera can display it directly, i.

While Inkscape does not have all the features of the leading vector editors, the latest versions provide for a large portion of basic vector graphics editing capabilities. People report successfully using Inkscape in a lot of very different projects Web graphics, technical diagrams, icons, creative art, logos, maps.
We try to always keep the codebase usable for real users, as we believe that a tight iteration cycle between users and developers will give best results. You can start using Inkscape alongside your other tools now! Also see Supported operating systems. Within several months the project had produced several releases, demonstrating a sequence of significant new features and improvements to the codebase and quickly established Inkscape as a noteworthy Open Source project.
The name is made up of the two English words "ink" and "scape". Ink is a common substance for drawings, and is used when the sketched work is ready to be permanently committed to paper, and thus evokes the idea that Inkscape is ready for production work. A scape is a view of a large number of objects, such as a landscape or ocean-scape, and thus alludes to the object-oriented nature of vector imagery. Many Web page authors use Inkscape for Web page mockups or to generate parts of Web pages, such as banners, logos, icons, and more.
For example, with Firefox 1. Web page authors who need to support widest variety of Web browsers convert each SVG graphic to a raster image. You can create clickable links from objects in Inkscape by right clicking the object, and clicking "Create Link".
Then, right click your new link and choose "Link Properties" to set the Web address and many other properties. Another way to make objects into Web links is to edit the XML directly. Then find the object you want people to click on. Let's say it's a red ellipse that looks like this in the XML editor:. No, Inkscape does not support SVG animation yet. It is for static 2-D graphics. Assuming development continues steadily, we will inevitably hit 1. One of the goals that must be completed before version 1.
